Instructions

  1. Grab a medium-sized saucepan and heat up to medium-low. Add a shot of olive oil to the pan and add a diced red onion to the pan. Season with salt and stir.
  2. Add the dried spices and stir, let the heat wake up all the flavours. After 5 minutes of softening the onions, add the garlic. Fry for 1-2 minutes.
  3. Now add all of your wet ingredients and let this sauce bubble away for 30 minutes on a low heat.  Stir occasionally. When the sauce is reduced, have a taste. Does it need more orange juice or salt/pepper? Adjust to your taste and blend the sauce up until smooth.
  4. Let everything cool completely.
  5. Take out your tofu and dry with a clean towel. Make sure all the water is squeezed out. Season the tofu with salt and pepper. I like to add the spices from the BBQ sauce too but that is totally optional.
  6. Cut 2,5 cm bars in length. Skewer them up so they look like ribs. Glaze over the BBQ sauce and let that marinate for 30 minutes or overnight.
  7. Preheat your oven to 200 Degrees Celcius.
  8. Put your tofu ribs on a lined baking sheet and bake for 30-35 minutes. Rotate the skewers and glaze with BBQ sauce  in between so every bit gets crispy and golden in the oven.

TIP: If you do not want to use an oven for this recipe, use a grill or BBQ to add rad grill marks and more smoky flavour.

Magical Note: you will probably have a lot of BBQ sauce left over. Store them in a clean jar with a tight lid for up to a week.  Spice up your sandwiches. use it as a dipping sauce. Put over pizza or as a stir-fry condiment.
